Not Afraid by Eminem

Eminem shows us another side of repair: repair for self, fueled by bravery, determination and anger.

Anger gets a bad reputation but it only emerges to let us know that a boundary has been crossed. The work is then to let the anger point us in the direction of the problem so that we can fix it, and not get lost in the anger itself.

In Not Afraid, Eminem reflects on addiction, mistakes, personal responsibility, and the determination to move forward differently.

The song is about facing the harms he has done head-on and choosing to take ownership over his future and raise his own bar.

This kind of honesty can be painful, but it’s often the first step toward healing.

As you listen, reflect on these questions:

  • What is something in your life that became easier to address once you stopped hiding from it?

  • What is the difference between feeling guilty and taking responsibility?

  • How do honesty and accountability create the possibility for repair?

  • What promises have you made to yourself about the person you want to become?

  • Who benefits when you take responsibility for your own healing?

When Eminem says, “I’m not afraid,” do you believe him? Fear is healthy as long as you don’t let it dictate your actions.
